Asus hears you, lets you unlock the bootloader of the Transformer Prime TF201

Asus follows suit of HTC and provides a tool that unlocks the bootloader of the Transformer Prime. The procedure is not all daisies, though, the downsides are worth considering if you aren’t a hundred-percent sure of what you’re doing.

The new unlock tool is available to those customers who run Ice Cream Sandwich on their tablets, downloadable here (select Android, Utilities).

The bootloader unlock utility is tailored to those who want to take full control over their Transformer Prime. By removing the lock, you can install custom ROMs, different versions of Android or any operating system that runs on the tf201. Since the development had been shunted by the locked bootloader, there aren’t many customizations you can apply to your tablet just yet. If there is going to be a new ROMs coming, it will be announced on the XDA forums.

Please note that removing the lock with the tool provided by Asus voids warranty, shuts you out of further official software updates, not to mention the mysterious sounding warning at the end of the first paragraph of legalese, “your purchased digital content may also be affected.”

Asus EEE Transfromer Prime to Ship in December, First Tablet with Tegra 3

The first Asus Transformer was something funky and unique. It was a tablet that could dock to a… there is no better way of describing than comparing it to the bottom half of a netbook. A touchpad, a keyboard, battery and some ports turned the Transformer into an Android based netbook of sorts, only with ARM based CPU and an IPS panel for a screen.

Now we’re waiting for the Transformer 2, also known as Transformer Prime, which will be the first tablet to ship with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 GPU/CPU (it’s going to be awesome, performance demo in the video above) Four cores, plus one to deal with mundane tasks such as background processes and anything else that does not need the powerhouse cores.

While four (actually five) cores in a tablet may sound like a plan to drain the battery like never before, the thing goes on for 12 hours, six more when docked. Compared to my iPad 1 that’s about twice the productivity, and I have to carry around my separate bluetooth keyboard.

It will definitely be an interesting tablet to consider if you don’t already have one from Apple (you do, don’t you).

The battery life and computing performance promises to be spectacular, but there is still one thing I can’t put my finger on. It’s going to sport a 8Mp camera at the back with the capability of shooting 1080p videos. The question is, who will walk around flailing a 10″ tablet shooting videos and taking pictures. That’s hipster tourist unleashed.

Release Date is set to December in the US, and January (bundled with the keyboard for 499 Pounds) in the UK according to V3.

This engadget article does a very good job at walking you through what to expect from the Asus Transformer Prime.

The official Asus EEE Transformer Prime page shows nothing more than a silhouette at the moment, expect it to change soon.
